The spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior, Faker Bouzgaia, revealed that the anti-narcotics sub-directorate in El Gorjani succeeded, during a qualitative operation, on the morning of Sunday, May 12, 2024, in partnership with central and regional teams in Sousse, to thrwat the operation to introduce a drug shipment towards the coast, valued at 3,000 plates of “Zatla” (around 300 kilos) and 25,000 narcotic tablets. A large sum of money was, on occasion, conficated as well as a number of movable property, cars and jewelry.

Bouzgaia added that 9 people inplicated in an international drug trafficking network active between the Maghreb countries and two European countries were arrested. They coordinated with each other employing advanced and modern communications equipment.

The spokesperson noted that this shipment from the sea was blocked in one of the Sahel ports.

He added that after consultation with the public prosecutor, the members of the dismantled network were charged with trafficking and drug trafficking, as well as money laundering, knowing that this network launders its money in real estate or movable property, adding that the value of the seizures amounts to nearly 8 million euros.

Speaking to Tunisie Numérique,spokesman for the courts of Monastir and Mahdia, Farid Ben Jaha, confirmed that 270 kilograms of cannabis and 10,000 drug tablets were seized. This clarification came after contradicting reports concerning the quantities seized in a recent security operation in the Sahel region.

Providing details of the operation, Ben Jaha noted that it emanated from the coast of the Baqalata region, Monastir, and spread towards the Italian island of Pantelleria. A shipment of drugs was thwarted and brought into the port of Baqalta, leading to the detention of the involved group and the seizure of around 270 kilograms of Indian cannabis, known as “zatla.”

Furthermore, the spokesman remarked that ongoing investigations led to the finding of 10,000 narcotic tablets in one of the factories. The Monastir Public Prosecution Office granted authorization for the arrest of 10 individuals associated with an international network engaged in smuggling and supplying drugs into Tunisian territory.

He also mentioned that efforts are continuing to apprehend the remaining individuals implicated in these crimes, which include participation in a criminal gang focused on drug smuggling and money laundering within Tunisian territory.

In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, Tunisian security forces dismantled a drug trafficking network working on the A01 motorway at the Hergla toll station.

This operation resulted in the detention of six people and the confiscation of various drugs, including 680 grams of cocaine.

An initial vehicle inspection led to the apprehension of three individuals discovered with cocaine and a sum of money in foreign currencies. A subsequent operation resulted in the arrest of three additional people found in possession of different quantities of cannabis, narcotic tablets, cocaine, as well as money in both Tunisian dinars and foreign currencies.

Moreover, in the Tunis region, a patrol arrested three dealers, one of whom is a notorious criminal previously condemned to 10 years in prison for drug trafficking. These individuals were found with cannabis and proceeds from drug sales.

Following these arrests, the judicial authorities have directed that the appropriate legal actions be taken.
