Tunisia – Another carnage involving a rental car… When will the phenomenon be dealt with?

A fatal traffic accident occurred this Saturday morning on national road No. 2 between the delegation of Bouhajla and Kairouan, consisting of a collision between a “Louage” car and a light car coming from Sidi Bouzid.

The accident resulted in a preliminary toll of one dead and eight injured, described as serious, specifying that ambulances and civil protection vehicles were deployed on site to transport the injured to the Aghlabides hospital.

It should be noted that units of the National Guard were also deployed to the site to inspect the damage and open a report for further research and investigation.

Tunisia – Kef : A man injured when his truck overturns​

A traffic accident happened today in the Boulifa area, on regional road No. 71 between Kef and Dahmani. A truck overturned, injuring the driver. Emergency services treated him on-site and then moved him to the Kef regional hospital for further examinations.

The civil protection intervention and rescue personnel also returned the truck to its normal position and removed it from the public road to facilitate traffic.

Tunisia – A wagon of the Sousse – Tunis train catches fire

The firefighters of the Regional Administration of Civil Protection in Nabeul were able to extinguish, this morning, Wednesday, November 6, 2024, a fire at the bottom of a passenger wagon coming from Sousse towards Tunis, at the Bir Bouragba Bridge in the Hammamet delegation of the governorate of Nabeul.

Smoke was observed coming from the bottom of the wagon, due to the friction of the electrical wires, according to preliminary data from the investigation.

A fire truck and an ambulance were tasked with evacuating all the passengers, without recording any injuries. The fire was extinguished and prevented from spreading to the rest of the vehicle.

Civil protection: More than 430 injured in last 24 hours​

Civil protection units have intervened in the last 24 hours to extinguish 31 fires in several regions of the country, as revealed in an official statement dated today.

A total of 492 interventions have been recorded, distributed as follows;

– Rescue and assistance on the roads: 115 interventions
– Assistance interventions outside of traffic accidents: 329 interventions
– Other interventions: 17 interventions

In September 2023, we reported on the struggles of passengers on Line 6 towards Monrouj, who suffocated in poorly ventilated metro cars due to malfunctioning air conditioning and the minimal airflow from tiny windows. The same problems are now confronted by passengers on Line 4. Like everyone else, they’ve become accustomed to travelling with the doors open, a dangerous habit. On Wednesday, November 13, between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m., yet another tragedy happened on Line 4, which had just departed from the Den Den station.

As often happens, a group of young people were hanging from the door, even when the metro was not packed, just for fun. Two high school students lost their balance and fell heavily. The impact was so violent that one of them lost an eye, which was completely dislodged from its socket. The other suffered a fractured pelvis. Those who saw this horrific scene will never forget the screams of these young people writhing on the ground.

This deep trauma will go unaddressed, buried inside, and may lead to psychological, neurotic, or violent behaviours. These unresolved issues become ticking time bombs for families, loved ones, and society. Such incidents are common, part of the everyday symbolic violence in public transportation. Everyone knows about it, has seen it, or heard of it, but no one does anything.

These are common news events that fuel discussions on social media, in coffee shops, tea salons, and offices. As usual, we will move on, covering up these shattered lives and quickly shifting direction to the next tragedy, creating an endless cycle. Anyone who has travelled in the West or elsewhere knows that a metro train can’t move even an inch without all doors being tightly closed. In Tunisia, we have grown used to “making do” with less.

The leaders of Transtu (Tunisian Transport Company) have become used to remaining stoic and passive in the face of all that is wrong. They have become indifferent, letting things deteriorate, partly because of insufficient resources and partly because citizens’ behaviour does not motivate them to act. Responsibility is shared, but the fact remains that this confluence of issues creates an explosive cocktail that kills, injures, and disables people for life.

Why do we look at other nations with longing eyes, dreaming of what they have, to the point where our children risk their lives in the Mediterranean to get there? Why don’t we act here the way they do elsewhere? Why do we look outside for what we can build here, among Africans? Because there is no political will, no citizen commitment. Our flaws lie within our minds. The barriers are in our heads.

When we finally tire of burying our sons and daughters prematurely, when we are fed up with disasters, maybe something will change. Perhaps there will be a true awakening to change what needs to be changed within us… but that’s a big “maybe.”

Kef : A collision between louage and a heavy truck resulted in 7 injuries​

The rescue teams from the regional directorate of civil protection in Le Kef responded to a road accident that occurred on National Road No. 18, in the region of Charchara, within the delegation of Sers.

The incident implicated a collision between a heavy truck and a collective transport vehicle (louage), resulting in 7 injured people with varying degrees of injuries.

According to the spokesperson for the civil protection, the injured were promptly helped and transferred to the regional hospitals in Le Kef and the local hospital in Sers to receive the necessary medical treatment.

According to the Civil Protection spokesperson, the accident involved the collision of a metro train with a pedestrian, resulting in the immediate passing of a 74-year-old woman.
