Tunisia – Sbeitla: sports team victim of road accident​

A light truck collided with a minibus which was transporting members of a Kick Boxing sports team, to Sidi Bouzid to play matches. The accident happened this morning on the Sebala road connecting the delegation of Sbeitla and the governorate of Sidi Bouzid,

Eleven injuries were registered, including one to the head, and other athletes suffered fractures and minor injuries. They were moved to the local hospital in Sbeitla to receive required first aid. 3 of them left the hospital after receiving the necessary care and their state of health was described as stable. The other eight were transferred to the Kasserine Regional Hospital, including one case hospitalized in the hospital’s medical intensive care unit

Tunisia-Series of rail accidents in Tunisia: SNCFT launches investigations​

The Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Tunisiens (SNCFT) revealed in a press release on Monday that it had initiated an inquiry following the derailment of a locomotive from a phosphate transport train, which happened on Sunday between Gafsa and Ghannouche stations.

This incident is in addition to two other tragic accidents that took place the same weekend. The first accident, which ensued on Sunday evening February 25, 2024 in Sakiet Ezzit, saw a person lose their life after being hit by a train connecting Tunis to Metallaoui.

The second accident, which occurred on Saturday February 24, 2024, implicated the death of a sub-Saharan national hit by a train between Le Kef and Tunis, before the Mallaha station.

The SNCFT voiced its regrets regarding these unfortunate events and confirmed the opening of two additional investigations to shed light on the circumstances of these incidents.

Tunisia – Medenine : 30 students injured in school bus accident​

A school bus accident involving a vehicle from the Regional Transport Company in Médenine, which was transporting students from the Sidi Makhlouf delegation, resulted in more than 30 people sustaining minor injuries. This incident impacted both the students on the bus and the drivers involved. According to the official spokesperson of the Médenine Regional Transport Company, the collision led to a substantial number of minor injuries among the occupants of both the bus and the car.

A medical source informed TAP that the majority of these injuries were light and posed no grave threat to the individuals’ health. Fortunately, most of the injured were able to leave the local hospital of Sidi Makhlouf on the same day. The hospital facilitated two ambulances to guarantee the timely and efficient transportation of the injured parties. Nevertheless, the Médenine University Hospital revealed four individuals whose conditions warranted hospitalization. This group included three students and the car’s driver, indicating the impact’s severity on both vehicle occupants.

Much fewer accidents, deaths and injuries on the roads

The National Road Safety Observatory, which depends on the Ministry of the Interior, said in a press release that 32 deaths and 185 injuries were recorded following 144 road accidents during the first half of the month of Ramadan.

According to the same source, the number of accidental shocks, deaths and injuries experienced respective decreases of 30, 9 and 39% compared to the same period in 2023. The capital, Tunis, is the governorate which displays the most accidents, 16, while Médenine has the most deaths, 6.

Tunisia – Sabotagers almost caused carnage on Gabes’ train

Unknown persons placed three tires of a heavy goods vehicle on the railway line linking the governorates of Sfax and Gabès, particularly between the stations of Aouina and Skhira. Which almost caused a catastrophe. The driver realized this act and had to use the emergency brakes, which caused panic among the passengers.

The trip was interrupted before resuming, knowing that this criminal act is not the first of its kind. A similar case was recorded on November 21, 2018 at the entrance to Zanoush station, when a train carrying passengers derailed due to a large tire placed on the rails.

It should be remembered that these acts are criminalized by law and their perpetrator is liable to a prison sentence of ten years, up to the death penalty, in the event of death caused by the accident.

Ramadan carnage : 3 deaths per day on roads​

“Since the start of the month of Ramadan until today, 400 road accidents have been registered, causing more than 90 deaths and 600 injuries,” declared a member of the executive board of the Tunisian Association of Road Prevention, Achref Yahyawi. And it too is based on statistics from the National Road Safety Observatory and the report on Civil Protection interventions.

The same source added that in 48 hours we documented 16 deaths and 160 injuries for 400 fatal accidents. “The country’s situation in terms of road safety is catastrophic when we see the average accidents, deaths and injuries recorded annually,” he asserted.

Tunisia - Sidi Bouzid : 8 killed in deadly road accident​

This Tuesday, April 9, 2028, eight (8) individuals were killed and another person was wounded in a collision between two cars, including a rental car, on national road No. 3 linking Tunis and Gafsa in the zone of ‘El Brij of the Sabala delegation, a Civil Protection source in Sidi Bouzid told Mosaique Fm.

Civil protection agents interfered as soon as they were informed of the accident, supported by ambulances from the regional hospital, to try to save the injured.
It should be remarked that among the deceased is a foreign doctor.

Safety authorities have promised to open an inquiry to determine the causes and circumstances of the accident.

Down, road accidents cause three deaths per day on average​

Since the beginning of the year and until April 7, the National Road Safety Observatory has documented 1,125 road accidents resulting in 279 deaths and 1,546 injuries, or around an average of three deaths (2 .8 dead) and 16 wounded per day on average.

During the same period, the number of accidents dropped by -32% compared to the same period last year, the number of deaths by -5% and the number of injuries by -31%.

Tunisia - Sfax : Part of road collapses causing two cars to fall into hole (video)​

The Bustan intersection on the Mahdia road from the state of Sfax saw an accident in which part of the road collapsed, leading to two vehicles falling into a ditch.

According to a source from Civil Protection, the protection units were able to interfere on the scene and worked to remove the two cars without registering any human casualties.

The same source suggested that the cause of the collapse was the large amounts of rainfall that had fallen during the recent period.

The National Road Traffic Observatory reported, in its latest report, that 1,571 road accidents were registered since the beginning of the year until Wednesday, May 8.

These accidents resulted in a disastrous toll of 367 deaths and 2,204 injuries during the same period.

Lack of vigilance and excessive speed are the central causes behind these accidents, as specified by the observatory.
