Russians in Georgia | DW Documentary

25.07.2022

More than 40,000 Russians have fled to Georgia since the war in Ukraine began. A lot of Georgians are skeptical or even hostile, however, toward the new arrivals from their much-hated neighbor.

Georgia has become one of the places of refuge for Russians fleeing either state persecution or the impact of western sanctions. After organizing an anti-war demonstration, Artyom Petukhov had to leave at short notice with little more than his smartphone.

He found support from an exiled compatriot, Egor Kuroptev, who moved to Tbilisi over ten years ago. Tanya from Moscow is not an activist, but has come to Georgia with her four children to give them a better future.

Meanwhile, there are growing concerns in Georgia about more Russian citizens potentially relocating to their country. Many Georgians are calling on the government to introduce a strict visa regime for the new arrivals and to distinguish between those fleeing for political or for economic reasons.

Relations between the two countries are already tense; since the 2008 war, 20% of Georgia's territory has been occupied by Russia. There is a widespread fear that Georgia could be Russia's next target and that Putin might take over the entire country. Volunteers from Georgia are therefore fighting on the Ukrainians’ side in the current conflict - and risking their lives in their own personal fight against Russia.

Russian deserters in Georgia | DW Documentary

In September 2022, Russian President Putin ordered a partial mobilization to deploy more soldiers to Ukraine. But many Russians defied that order and fled the country – as many as half a million to date.

Some 100,000 Russian deserters have fled to Georgia so far. The nation maintains very close, but also rather strained relations with its neighbor - after all the most recent war with Russia wasn’t that long ago.

Just how welcome are the deserting Russians? How are they faring in a foreign country after an often-risky journey out of Russia?

How are they getting along with the Ukrainian refugees also accepted in large numbers by Georgia?

DW reporter Oxana Evdokimova reports from the Georgian capital Tbilisi.

I Found The Most Soviet Place in the WORLD 🇬🇪 o_O

Recently I was on a road trip around Georgia with a few friends, and I spotted the most insane and by far the most SOVIET location I've ever seen in my travels around the Post-Soviet countries.

Some guy just made an entire memorial praising Stalin, the dictator of the USSR who originally came from Georgia.

Which is particularly weird, because Georgia is very Western-minded and is heading towards the EU.

Let's check this Stalinist memorial out, as well other abandoned Soviet buildings on our way to the Georgian town of Kutaisi.

We'll also visit some waterfalls and try some local Georgian cuisine. Hope you enjoy the road trip and the vlog! Smash like and sub for more thx xoxo
