Mass exit to Italy threat in Tunisia soccer row put on hold

28 October 2020

A project by residents of a Tunisian town to make a mass exit by sea to Italy in protest at sanctions on their football club has been put on hold, organisers said Wednesday.

They said the departure of over 2,000 Tunisians from the small Mediterranean town of Chebba, planned for Thursday morning, has been delayed because of "bad weather".

The Tunisian Football Federation on October 17 slapped a one-year ban on CS Chebba, officially over an incomplete and late membership application.

The club's president has for months been at odds with the federation's chief, Wadie Jary, especially after Facebook posts criticising the TFF's financial dealings.

Hundreds of angry fans have taken to the streets of Chebba blocking roads and setting tyres on fire in protest at the suspension.

On Tuesday, the sports and youth ministry vowed to work for a solution acceptable to CS Chebba and taking into account economic and social hardships in Tunisia.

Tents have been erected at Chebba port for people to register for the crossings on an armada of more than 200 boats, with whole families signed up as well as youths from disadvantaged regions in the country's interior such as Kasserine.

Illegal sea crossings to Europe from Tunisia have been on the rise, largely driven by economic woes after a 2011 popular revolution that many hoped would bring change.

With unemployment now topping 18 percent, almost 12,000 migrants reached Italy in illegal crossings between January 1 and July 26, according to the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR.

COVID-19 crisis has worsened despair among young Tunisians

Increasing their urge for irregular migration - social expert

05 November, 15:06

(ANSAmed)- "The COVID-19 crisis has worsened the feeling of despair among Tunisian youth and dispelled their fear of death, thus increasing their urge for irregular migration," Ahmed Labyedh, an expert in social and psychological issues, said Thursday in a statement to TAP.

Their hopes and dreams for a better future in their country, which is living in an economic crisis complicated by the Covid-19 crisis, have diminished, he explained.

According to him, the irregular migration journeys, which take place in conditions that double the possibility of coronavirus infection, have not deterred these young people from embarking on this adventure and exposing themselves to the dangers of disease, drowning and suffering in order to live in other countries.

He indicated that these young people see the concern of authorities and governments around the world about the COVID-19 crisis as an opportunity to realise their plans in this regard without being noticed.

French request for deportations posing thorny issue for Tunisians

Interview with former Tunisian National Security Adviser, retired Admiral Kamel Akrout.

Thursday 05/11/2020

TUNIS--French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin is expected in Tunis by the end of this week to discuss issues that will include illegal migration and terrorism policies in the wake of last week’s gruesome attack against a Nice church during which three people were allegedly killed by a 21-year-old Tunisian illegal migrant.

The attack, which comes on the heels of the brutal killing of French middle school teacher Samuel Paty, has sparked a major outcry in France and put pressure on the government to take tougher measures against extremist activities and illegal migration. Some measures have already been taken, while others are being discussed and are likely to include the deportation of extremism suspects and illegal migrants to their respective countries of origin in the Maghreb.

And indeed, the Macron government has taken till now several measures, including:

  • Banning bringing mosque imams from outside France.
  • Imposing restrictions on the freedom of movement of political Islam, which the Elysee spokesperson called the “root of the evil.”
  • Closely monitoring mosques.
  • Closely monitoring Islamic cultural centres, which the French president considered a real “Trojan horse” that could spread extremist ideas according to French authorities.
  • Closing down and banning some associations, such as the Ahmed Yassin Society and the Turkish ultra-nationalist “Grey Wolves.”
  • Expelling Islamic extremists from France and deporting them to their countries of origin.
