Human rights violations in Belarus, including repression of protesters and dissidents, may be equated with a crime against humanity.

This was stated by the UN after studying the situation of human rights violations in the country after the 2020 protests.

The Permanent Mission of Belarus to the UN in Geneva rejected the report as an instrument of lobbying the anti-Belarus agenda of Western countries at the UN and the Human Rights Council.

For nearly three decades, democracy has eluded Belarus.

Soon after the fall of the Soviet Union, the country found itself in the unrelenting grip of one man: Alexander Lukashenko, the soon-to-be last dictator of Europe, who would go on to spare no effort in consolidating his grip on power and silencing any and all opposition.

Although recent years have seen serious outbreaks of popular discontent across the country, especially in the runup and the aftermath of the 2020 election, which offered hope for change, the dictator refused to unclench his iron grip, and crushed the largest mass protests that the regime in Minsk has ever seen.

One of those brave enough to challenge the autocrat – although barred from officially running against him – was Valery Tsepkalo, former Belarusian Ambassador to the United States and Mexico, entrepreneur, and expert to the UN Secretary-General in the field of information and communication technologies.
