Tunisia – More than 21,000 migrants have left Tunisia by sea since start of year​

The spokesperson for the General Directorate of the National Guard, Brigadier General Houcemeddine El-Jebabli, confirmed that there had been a record growth in the number of migrants illegally crossing maritime borders since the start of the year until April 10, compared to the same period last year.

This number is assessed at 21,100, an increase of 7,000 migrants by sea. Similarly, more than 19,000 were stopped from entering Tunisian territory by land, specifying that more than 566 organizers and intermediaries have been arrested. This number has increased fivefold compared to last year.

Concerning sub-Saharan migrants in Sfax, Jebabli disclosed the presence of several networks specializing in human trafficking, whether in countries of origin or transit and host countries. Efforts are still underway and the Ministry of the Interior is keen to prevent this trend, with the interception of migrants and numerous money transfers from these virtual currencies.

 
Tunisia – Sousse : Arrest of a smuggler who improvised as a boat builder

Tunisia - Illegal migration: 19 bodies recovered during last 24 hours​

Tunisia – Mahdia : The sea throws up ten corpses in one day

Nearly 500 sub-Saharan migrants evacuated from a building in Sfax

The public prosecutor’s office at the Sousse Court of First Instance has issued Arrest Warrants for more than 60 irregular immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa and Sudan, the court’s official spokesperson, Wissem Cherif announced.

Cherif reported in a statement to the press that the public prosecutor’s office has brought several charges against the defendants, namely entry into Tunisia from points other than the border, illegal stay in this country and membership in a complex group likely to disturb the public order and the intention to perpetrate criminal acts.

He added that the defendants were directed to the Sousse Penal Council to appear before it next Wednesday.

The security units of the Sousse National Security district had formerly led a security campaign which affected the entire governorate and resulted in the arrest of more than 60 irregular immigrants.

Tunisia – Sousse : Eight-month prison sentences for 60 irregular sub-Saharan migrants​

60 illegal sub-Saharan immigrant detainees appeared yesterday Wednesday before the first chamber of the Sousse court of first instance after the public prosecutor issued them with arrest warrants.

The chamber convicted 50 of them to 8 months in prison and deferred the hearing to a later date for the others, while maintaining them in detention, according to the official spokesperson for the court, Wissam Cherif.

Formerly, the prosecution at the Sousse court of first instance had charged these detainees, originally from Sudan and sub-Saharan Africa, with having entered Tunisia through points other than the border posts, with having stayed there illegally and with having joined a complex group likely to disturb public order and aiming to perpetrate crimes.

Security units in Sousse had carried out an extensive-scale security campaign which resulted in the arrest of a significant number of irregular migrants in the Msaken and Boukhzar areas.
