Just hours after the Twin Towers fell on September 11, 2001, Donald Trump, then a New York real estate developer, spoke live on television about witnessing the attacks and noted that the destruction had left his 40 Wall Street tower as the tallest building in downtown Manhattan.

Speaking by phone with WWOR-TV, Trump said he had a window looking directly at the World Trade Center and watched the destruction unfold. Where he had once seen the towers behind the Empire State Building, he said, he was now “looking at absolutely nothing.”

Asked whether his building in lower Manhattan at 40 Wall Street had been damaged, Trump said it had not, before noting that the destruction of the Twin Towers had changed its place in the Manhattan skyline.

“40 Wall Street was actually the second-tallest building in downtown Manhattan,” Trump said, adding that after the World Trade Center was built, it became the second tallest, “and now it’s the tallest.”

During the interview, Trump was asked what he would have done about the attacks had he become president.

He said he would take a “very, very tough line,” arguing that officials likely already had a general idea of who was responsible and where they were.

“This just can’t be tolerated,” Trump said.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani released more than 170,000 pages of internal records Tuesday that show officials misled people about the safety of the air around Ground Zero after the September 11 terror attacks.

“People got sick because the leaders they trusted lied and told them they were safe to breathe in toxic air,” Mamdani said during a news conference, according to CNN.
