Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a historic $70 billion clean energy and critical minerals agreement involving the federal government, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Innu Nation.

The project will triple capacity at Churchill Falls to 14,000 megawatts of renewable power — more than BC Hydro’s entire generating capacity and the equivalent of 18 Hoover Dams — while opening the Labrador Trough’s iron ore and graphite resources.

Carney THREATENS Trump, “You Would Want Us to Stop Sending Oil?"

Prime Minister Mark Carney has suspended all trade negotiations with the United States and ordered Canadian negotiators to return to Ottawa.

In a detailed press conference, Carney stated that the United States “asked too much and offered too little,” describing American economic integration as a weapon and noting that its commitments are sometimes “written in pencil.”

He listed the constantly changing justifications for US tariffs, dismantled the claim that Canada is running an unfair trade surplus, and revealed last-minute demands that would have made Canadian auto production uneconomic and restricted Canada’s ability to sign other trade deals. o_O

Carney confirmed Canada will match the new tariffs and restated that the country will not accept a deal at any price.

❤️ Premiers glad Carney didn’t sign Canada-US trade deal

Global News

After days of negotiations, Canada and the United States have failed to reach a trade agreement, with Prime Minister Mark Carney saying he was “walking away from a bad deal.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says he’s glad Carney didn’t sign, saying it was a “bad deal for Ontario… the auto sector, the steel sector, and the manufacturing sector.

Other Canadian premiers are also chiming in, showing a united front as trade talks collapse, and standing by Carney’s decision.

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew called Trump and his administration “deeply flawed,” saying Canada should just “duke it out” for the remaining two years of his presidential term, when “hopefully sanity will return to America.”

As Carney says he will match 50 per cent tariffs “dollar-for-dollar,” Alberta Premier Danielle Smith warns plans could backfire, but agrees signing the deal “would have been too painful.”

Touria Izri has the details, as premiers brace for job losses and call for more support.

Quebec Paid 0.2 Cents for Newfoundland's Power — For 57 Years. Canada Just Killed the Contract.

The Decision Room
The Decision Room
23.08.2026

In 1969, Newfoundland signed away the power of Churchill Falls — one of the largest hydroelectric stations on Earth — to Quebec at 0.2 cents per kilowatt hour, locked in until 2041.

Quebec resold it at market rates for 57 years. It's widely called the worst contract in Canadian history. This week, it died 15 years early.

Newfoundland, Quebec and Ottawa signed North America's largest-ever clean energy deal: the 1969 contract terminated, Quebec paying roughly 30 times more, $49 billion in value for Newfoundland, a new 2.7 GW complex at Gull Island, and — for the first time — guaranteed transmission so Newfoundland can sell its power to Ontario, New England or New York on its own terms.

In this video: the full story of the contract that poisoned Canada for half a century, the three-act ending that killed it, and why the lesson Canada learned from Quebec is exactly the lesson it's now applying to the United States.
