World Iran : Updates on the new Supreme Leader — and they are not good news for Trump

He has not been seen since his inauguration as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, succeeding his late father, Ali Khamenei. A flood of rumors has circulated about the fate of the new Ayatollah, Mojtaba Khamenei, who was only a few meters away from his father when the first Israeli-American bombs struck on February 28.
Some — a claim largely spread by Israel — said he had been seriously wounded or even killed. Others suggested he had taken refuge in one of the bunkers in the capital, Tehran, as enemy-linked spies were allegedly hunting him down. Now there are updates about his condition…
Or rather, a senior figure within the regime has provided those updates. He put an end to speculation and conjecture by stating that the Iranian leader did not die in the attack that killed his father, his mother, his wife, his son, and his brother-in-law. According to information released on Wednesday, March 11, he is “safe and sound.”
“I heard reports saying that Mojtaba Khamenei had been injured. I asked friends who have connections. They told me that, thank God, he is safe and sound,” wrote Yousef Pezeshkian — the son of the Iranian president and also a government adviser — in a post on Telegram.
Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, is believed to have been injured on the first day of the Israeli-American assault, though no details were initially available about the nature of his wounds. According to
The New York Times, which cited three Iranian officials on Wednesday, he “was injured, particularly in his legs, but remains conscious and sheltered in a highly secure location with limited communication capabilities.”
The American newspaper also quoted two Israeli military officials corroborating the injuries — another indication, according to the report, that the country of the Mullahs is riddled with spies. Israeli intelligence is said to have gathered this information before he was elected as the new Supreme Leader by the clerical body last Sunday.
Following his appointment, Tel Aviv declared that Mojtaba Khamenei is the next target and that eliminating him is a priority. What is certain is that under such circumstances, even if he recovers physically, he will not appear publicly as frequently as his father did. The Israeli army will likely seize any opportunity to eliminate the man whom President Donald Trump has described as a “lightweight” and a puppet leader.
Yet killing him would not eliminate the ideology he represents. Another Supreme Leader would quickly take his place, and the antagonism with Israel and the United States would remain. His disappearance would not change the major challenges facing the opposing camp, just as the neutralization of dozens of senior Iranian officials has had no impact on the course of the war or the chain of command.
Americans and Israelis will therefore have to find something other than assassinations of leaders — an overt violation of the laws of war — to achieve their objectives. Time is also working against the American president. His voters are beginning to show signs of unease over the economic risks generated by what critics describe as a reckless and counterproductive venture, only months before the U.S. midterm elections.
