Crime in Tunisia - 2025

Tunisia – Theft from the Red Crescent office in Sousse described as strange… The strange thing is, rather, the nature of the stolen items

1743406976020.png

By LM | March 30, 2025 at 8:00 PM

In an incident described as strange, a warehouse used by the Red Crescent was burglarized and its contents stolen on Friday, according to Omar Salameh, head of the Red Crescent regional authority and national relief official.

Salameh added, in a press statement, that 50 Ramadan baskets intended for distribution to vulnerable people were stolen, as well as medical and paramedical equipment that were to be distributed to the Palestinian people, and wool blankets that were to be distributed to refugees and poor families.

If this incident was described as strange… We really don't see what's strange about a warehouse full of consumer goods, and especially one without a guard, being burglarized. On the other hand, it's the stored and stolen items that are open to debate.

It's unclear what 50 Ramadan baskets are doing in the Red Crescent warehouse on the 28th day of the holy month, why they weren't distributed, given that there are certainly around 50 families in need, and for what purpose and for what purpose are they stored there?

Secondly, what about the theft of medical supplies intended to help our Palestinian brothers in Gaza from this warehouse, when citizens had been donating them for the residents of Gaza for a year and a half, and why was it not sent there?

Thirdly, which refugees are we talking about when it comes to the wool blankets that were supposed to be provided to them?

The authorities furthermore identified the culprits and included them in the search list.

It is worth noting that unknown people had broken into the mosque the previous night, stealing everything from the donation box to audio equipment, a water heater, and a gas cylinder, which led to the cancellation of the Fajr prayer call.

A tragedy rocked Tozeur on Sunday, April 6, 2025. “A woman succumbed to her wounds after being seriously burned by her husband,” according to statements by Colonel Bilel Wsifi, Regional Director of Civil Protection in Tozeur.

The alarm was raised around noon. Emergency services were notified of the presence of a woman lying on the side of the road, her body covered in extensive burns. A Civil Protection response team, quickly dispatched to the scene, determined that the victim had second- and third-degree burns over almost her entire body.

The victim was immediately rushed to the Tozeur Regional Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after being admitted.

According to initial information, the prime suspect is none other than her husband, also a close family member. He allegedly doused his wife with flammable liquid before setting her on fire, following marital conflicts, the nature of which remains unclear at this time.

The case has been referred to the courts, and an investigation has been opened to shed light on the circumstances of this heinous crime. Judicial authorities are working to establish the precise facts and determine who is responsible for what appears to be a shocking femicide.

This tragedy acts as a further reminder of the need to act firmly against violence against women, a scourge that continues to claim victims despite awareness-raising efforts and the legal frameworks in place.

The General Directorate of National Security reported today that, following a phone call received by a patrol from the Sned police station in the Gafsa governorate reporting the discovery of a young man’s body behind the town’s high school, an investigation was immediately launched.

According to the same source, the victim had head wounds and was found bound at both legs and hands.

After a series of in-depth investigations on the ground, suspicions quickly fell on the individual who had initially alerted the police to the discovery. He was arrested in record time, in coordination with the public prosecutor.

During questioning at the police station, it emerged that the suspect, along with an accomplice, had violently hit the victim in the head with a stone following a fight. They then reportedly tied the victim with plastic restraints and dumped the body behind the high school in Sned. The main suspect then contacted law enforcement, seemingly in an attempt to divert suspicion and mislead the justice system.

After consulting the investigating judge in charge of the case, a pre-trial detention order was issued against the suspects, and the investigation is ongoing.

Imed El Omri said that the public prosecutor has also decided to refer a former regional director of equipment and the legal representative of a public works company to court under free status (not in custody), following the earlier decision to place a department head from the regional directorate of equipment in pre-trial detention as part of the same case.

It is worth recalling that the Governor of Kasserine, Ziad Trabelsi, had decided, after a field visit to the road connecting Boulehnech to downtown Thala, to refer the project file to the public prosecutor due to suspected embezzlement of public funds. This decision came after a technical report indicated several irregularities, including insufficient thickness in the base and foundation layers, and the use of materials that did not meet technical standards.

Financial irregularities were also found, most notably the full payment to the contractor although the work was incomplete and failed to meet required specifications.

It should be noted that the contract for this project was awarded and work began on March 15, 2021, for a total amount of 2 million dinars.
